Unit Plan
Lesson One
Introduction to assessment and to definition of Environmental Sustainability. |
Lesson Overview
• Students are introduced to the topic for this unit which is environmental sustainability. Students will work initially as a group by firstly creating a KWL table on the whiteboard with respect to the definition of environmental sustainability. • After doing this introduce the students to the website which they will use in this unit of work. Explain that this will be the main resource for the unit. Guide students (through their computers) to the home page using their computers and teacher computer via IWB. Now take students to resources tab and have them click on ‘what is environmental sustainability button’. Read this page together with the students. • Show the students a YouTube clip on modern office methods which will emphasise the way in which environmental sustainability is managed in an office situation. This will broaden their knowledge and let them know that this is a real life situation. When the clip is over ask them their thoughts on how they feel about the topic. Ask how they think they may find ways in their own school to improve environmental sustainability. ·After doing this introduce the students to the assessment task by guiding them to Instruction page where they can read instruction whilst teacher plays Voki on IWB. |
Resources
• Computer lab with each student having access to computer and the internet • Whiteboard • Whiteboard markers • Interactive whiteboard • http://toolkit.smallbiz.nsw.gov.au • Video on modern office methods |
Teacher Notes
This is the first lesson of the unit and therefore the students need to be explained the definition of the topic. They are also given a tool which will immediately catch their attention and make them become interested in the topic. A YouTube clip is used as it emphasises the way in which a modern office views and implements environmental sustainability Getting the students to then talk about their views from the video will show the teacher their interest and knowledge of the topic. |
Lesson Two
Finding information on environmental sustainability. Introduce forum and blog for unit communication. |
• Review lesson one and show the students YouTube clip on Ellens Office Goes Green. Then the teacher will instruct students to the Lesson activities tab on the website. Have students read through this with teacher on their computers and IWB together and then instruct them to complete the task.
• Explain to the students that throughout this unit they can work together to help each other through the use of the blog and forum on the website. By working together they can help each other to complete the assessment task. • Introduce the blog and forum to the students and show them an example of a blog made by the teacher so they get the idea. They can use this blog and forum to collaborate together and put down their ideas and research with respect to the assessment task. They can also access this away from the classroom at home. Advise students to go to lesson activities tab and then to sub heading efficient resource use. Use this information to create a PowerPoint presentation as stated on this page. |
• Computer with internet access
• Blog • YouTube clip – Ellen goes green • Worksheet on complying with regulations |
The previous lesson is briefly revisited in order to remind the students of the assessment task. The use of regulations task is to further familiarise the students with environmental sustainability and also authenticate the topic by way of showing them how their local council manages and implements environmental sustainability. The concepts of an online blog and forum for the student’s involvement and collaboration. The online blog is the concept of blogging online. Make sure the students are aware of the legal and ethical responsibilities of posting to the blog and forum. These tools are a way for students to collaborate with each other. This can include information, research, photos, videos etc. Students will add to this throughout the unit to help come up with the best scenarios for solutions to environmental sustainability for the school. The creation of the PowerPoint also helps develop knowledge on the subject as well as refining their ICT skills.

Lesson Three
Introduce Audit table and working on assessments |
• Inform the students that they will be researching the school faculties and need to fill in audit table located on website on steps to success tab. They will need to physically research these areas of the school and use class cameras to take photo’s which can be placed in their reports.
• Run through other information in steps to success tabs where they will find information to help them complete their assessment tasks. • Tell the students that other resources and referencing material is available on the website to help with the assessment task. Monitor the students to make sure they don't go off task. • Briefly explain that they have to reference material they have used and that we will discuss this in detail next lesson. • Show students where on the webpage that sample assessment tasks are located and also where assessment criteria sheet is located in the steps to success tab. |
• Computers with internet access
• Computer lab • Websites for research (provided in resources & strategies tab) • Class camera’s |
In this lesson the students begin work on their assessment task and are also starting to use their computers researching the topic to complete their assessment reports. Teacher must monitor them closely to see if they're keeping on task.
The class then start to explore the environmental problems facing different faculties within the school and reporting their findings through the use of the audit table template provided. |
Lesson Four
Understanding the correct referencing techniques and using a web resource to help with this. |
• Inform the students that they cannot plagiarise and that they need to reference any material that they use from others in their reports and also that they need to have a bibliography.
• Instruct students to the Lesson activities tab on the website and then onto students bibliography tab. Have students click on the plagiarism button and complete the quiz. After completing online quiz record students results. • Go back to students bibliography tab and then read through page with students in IWB. • Instruct students to then click on cite a reference button on the bottom of the page. Use explicit teaching method (I do, we do and you do) where teacher first demonstrates how to use citethisforme web site. Then do it with students and then have students do it on their own and monitor their work and progress. • Students can then blog or post to forum their thoughts on this tool. |
• Computer lab
• Blogger • Computer with internet access • Cite this for me webpage • Plagiarism quiz |
This lesson provides a great website that the students will use to make referencing very easy for this topic and also one that they can use for all other KLA’s. They then update their assessment rport bibliography as they complete it. The online quiz helps to reinforce the seriousness of plagiarism and why they should always reference sources where they have attained information from.
The explicit teaching used allows for each student to fully grasp the idea and runs through a step by step guide to simplify the task to cater for all different learning styles within the classroom. Students are now to the point where they can use all information to help with the completion od their assessment task. |
